My previous benchmarks also indicated that even well designed B-Tree indexes underperformed columnstores. Each separator must be a single character in the collation sequence being used. The query optimizer does actually not even use them and forcing the use of those indexes performed worse. A nonclustered index does not order the actual rows of the table.
